From Rønne to Sandhamn

Thursday July 11th - Friday July 12th
Sailing to Sweden
Sandhamn

There will always be calm after a storm. When we made it out to the sea, the wind was easy and tired like parents after the kids went to bed. Only the sea was bumpy. The wind from the few previous days had wrinkled the water and it would take some time before it was flat again.

Pekka slept at the bow which goes up and down in the waves. When our friend woke up from a dream where he had been tossed up and down he noticed he was being tossed up and down. When sailing upwind on the sharp waves you could almost expect to be left mid air from the foremost bunk once in a while. Not quite.

We took guidance from the weather forecast, avoided the shipping route again and steered towards the Swedish coast and the Hanö bay. The wind picked up before the night to give us good speed then died down and started blowing again at night. The Baltic winds shift as often as the opinions of a politician. When the sun came up it was calm and we motored to Sandhamn to cook lunch and to rest.

Sandhamn harbor is easy, protected and clearly popular. The Swedish and Finnish summer vacation season was visible. There were boats everywhere and dock spots difficult to get in the evening. When we arrived there were only two boats. Before the evening every dock spot had at least one boat.

Pekka's week was coming to an end as well. He had to leave us the next morning and stay on the peer to wave at us when we continued towards the north.
